How We Work for You
Successful negotiation strategies have been the subject of much professional research. The Harvard Negotiation Project has produced some of the most compelling and successful research conclusions over the last several decades.
The studies concluded that a confrontational, positional style of negotiation often results in a divisive and counterproductive battle, whereas an integrative, cooperative approach is much more likely to result in a successful resolution.
While each situation is unique and requires a unique application, we use this collaborative approach to create breakthrough outcomes that are rarely possible through a confrontational strategy. The following are typical steps we use as part of our negotiation process:
- We objectively analyze the situation/dispute and determine the positions and interests of both parties.
- We listen to and understand each side's perception of the situation.
- We help each party see the other side's needs and point of view.
- We then collaboratively generate a variety of options that could resolve the situation.
- We review the available options with both parties and determine which option or combination of options will successfully resolve the situation/dispute.
- If appropriate, we solidify the resolution with a written agreement between the parties.
If the parties involved have a long term relationship, this type of negotiation/mediation promotes an improved relationship between the parties and lays the groundwork for successful ventures in the future.
If the parties do not have a long term relationship, this type of resolution leaves both parties satisfied with the outcome and opens the possibility of future involvement.
